Mode 7 initially announced Frozen Synapse 2 as an open world tactical game back in February. Today, a new trailer shows off how that approach will work.
It certainly seems like an ambitious project, allowing players to generate a myriad of cities, breach any building, form and break alliances on the fly, and execute strategies in the familiar style of Frozen Synapse.

If you never played Frozen Synapse, it was a tactical turn-based game in which you can plan out moves and test how they might play out, even going so far as to give you control of what the enemy might do, before letting you execute your plan with the goal of taking out the enemy. It was confined to arenas and rooms though, so the open world will be quite the departure.
The footage in the trailer is pre-alpha single player gameplay, so there may be quite a few tweaks between now and its release sometime this year.
